About SIGA

The Southern Illinois Golf Association is an affiliate organization of the Metropolitan Amateur Golf Association, the Allied Golf Association licensed by the USGA in the Southern Illinois region. The SIGA purpose is to promote the best interests and true spirit of the game of golf throughout Southern Illinois.

WHAT DOES THE SIGA DO?

Dating back to 1924, our Directors have devoted their time and effort to advance the great game of golf throughout Southern Illinois. With the help of its Member Clubs, the SIGA works to keep the game great by providing the following services.

ADVISORY COMMITTEE

The Southern Illinois Golf Association’s Advisory Committee has been established to assist the Metropolitan Amateur Golf Association (MAGA), to which it is an affiliate organization in the following: SIGA Championships, SIGA Junior Golf Tour, SIGA Hall of Fame Nominations, SIGA Player of the Year and to give input to MAGA Executive Director and Executive Board.

It is the intent of the SIGA Advisory Committee to work with MAGA to facilitate and promote amateur golf in Southern Illinois, not limited to the above.

The intent of the Committee would be to have a Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson and three (3) additional members from SIGA Member Clubs.

The committee would meet periodically during the year to achieve the SIGA mission:

“To foster, promote and advance the interest and true spirit of the Game of Golf.”

CONDUCTING COMPETITIONS

The SIGA conducts several amateur events each year and those include:

  • SIGA CHAMPIONSHIP
The longest running Amateur Tournament in Illinois. Tremendous history and very hard to win.
  • TONY STEVENS CUP MATCHES
Competition among Member Clubs competing as six-man teams. Has become a very popular event. Rotated among 18 hole member clubs. Champions are recognized in the overall and 9-hole club divisions.
  • SOUTHERN ILLINOIS AMATEUR
The Southern Illinois Amateur was reintroduced in 2020 as a joint effort of the Metropolitan Amateur Golf Association.
  • JUNIOR GOLF TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP
This is the Junior Golf Tours final event of the season. Juniors compete for Tournament Champions in their age group and for Player of the Year in their age group.

HANDICAP SYSTEM

The SIGA, through its affiliation with the Metropolitan Amateur Golf Association, offers the GHIN Handicap System for posting of scores for handicap determination. When the Rules of Golf are observed, handicaps shall enable golfers of differing abilities to compete on an equitable basis. The SIGA’s pre-flighted sanctioned events along with past tournament scores determine a players flight in the tournaments.

COURSE RATING

The SIGA is authorized to rate Member courses in accordance with USGA guidelines. This service is available only to Member Clubs as part of our Association’s attempt to advance the true spirit of the game.
